The students in
the gifted and talented program at Makalapa in Hawaii have been
working on survival and adaptation. We studied about adaptations,
mainly about animals, and how they are related to survival. We did
research and some short reports on adaptations. Then we had to do
three big web sites on past, present, and future animals mainly
talking about their adaptations to their environment and how they are
able to survive with all the changes on the earth. The changes can be
all sorts of things. They could be climate, predators, or other
things. That is what survival is about, being able to adapt to the
habitat. In class we did some studies on plant adaptation too.
Although we all chose to do our webpage research on animals, we know
that plant species also have to adapt to new conditions if the
species is going to continue to live.
To adapt means to change or adjust for a purpose. For
animals the purpose of adapting is to be able to survive in the
environment that they live in. All living things have to make
adaptations to survive in their environment. Adaptations take a very
long time. Some take many thousands of years. But that's what living
things have to do to survive. On of the main parts of survial is to
make adaptations to your habitat. If the environment changes and you
can't adapt you can't survive.
We wrote about
the animals' survival in their particular environment. We researched
the animals and what their environment was like to see how their
characteristics match with their habitat and how that showed
adaptation.
Here is the research we did on animals from the past and present, and what we imagine for the future. Some of the creatures from the past that were around millions of years ago are still around today and are still creatures of the present. Some of them are almost exactly the same and some have gone through some changes. The ones who are still around have adapted to their changing environment, surroundings, and conditions and those that couldn't became extinct. Links and the animals of the future will be added on as we finish our pages.
